Santander - Where you find yourself
All started when I decided to leave my town and jump into the Erasmus - world. For sure there was lots of fears, excitement, happiness, impatience.. but the fears didn’t stopped me. I left for Santander. And I promise you, choosing this city wasn’t a coincidence.
Almost 2 years ago I started to watch Gran Hotel (a Spanish serie), which was filmed in a beautiful palace located on the top of a peninsula called « Magdalena ». I immediately felt in love with those landscapes that I was seeing in the serie and was wondering if one day I could go there and visit that amazing place where my favorite serie was filmed.
A year ago, when I decided to apply for an Erasmus program, I was amazingly surprised when I saw that I could choose the city where is located that beautiful place called « Palacio de la Magdalena ». I immediately applied for it and been accepted to do my Erasmus in the Universidad de Cantabria located in Santander.
When arrived in Santander, I immediately went to visit Palacio de la Magdalena : it was for sure the first thing that I wanted to see. I walked into the woods of the peninsula for a little bit before arriving on top of the peninsula, where I saw it : the palace was here, right in front of me and I realized in that moment that I just made a big dream of mine come true. I entered into the palace to visit the inside of it and was walking into the corridors where the serie was filmed, I went to the big balcony with the blue ocean view, where the main characters (a couple) of the serie met for the first time. Maybe that serie isn’t known from the people outside of Spain, or not that much, but it wasn’t only about a serie, it was just about dreaming about something without believing that actually it could one day come true.
I immediately felt in love with the city. I was about to live there for a few months : having walks near to the beach, reading a book by listening the calming sound of the waves and seeing the boats in front of me. I never lived in a city with a sea and I was sure that those few months would have been only amazing. Santander’s people are lovely and kind, always there to help you when you need to find a place that you are looking for. They are chic, classy and they seem to be happy and enjoying their lives. I loved seeing all those people walking on the streets, laughing with friends by doing some shopping or drinking in the bars, eating in the restaurants. There was something inspiring in those people, something that I wanted to have, to feel. The city made me always smile.
Erasmus is an experience that truly changes your life. It is a challenge of few months or a year to take the control of your own life and live your dreams. It is the moment when you have to say yourself : « Maybe it is the last chance that I have to live such an experience » and you have to go for it and live it 100% without any regrets.
I met wonderful people during my stay, people that always were here for me, even if we didn’t knew each other for years. We became friends and they were people who could always make you laugh and forget all you problems. We all felt similar things : fear, love, excitement. For all of us it was a new and beautiful experience and we always encouraged each other to go forward, to not give up, even if we were missing our families, friends, home.
Everything was going so fast. Days, weeks and months flew so quickly and we are here, saying goodbye to all of it, to all of us. In the past, I visited a few popular cities such as Rome, Athens, Barcelona, etc, and loved all of them, but in Santander I truly felt like home. I started to love that city more than my own town. I felt like from all the places that I’ve been, Santander was the place where I belonged. And leaving this city is tearing my heart in pieces, because I know that I’m leaving something big and beautiful behind me. I may never see some friends again, I may never have the chance to come back here, but if I could made a dream come true by coming in here, I’m sure now that I can do the same maybe a little bit later.
This beautiful experience taught me that everything is possible and that every dream can come true, mostly when you least expect it.
